Illinois Lead Safe Housing Task Force
The Illinois Lead Safe Housing Task Force develops and implements workable strategies to eliminate childhood lead poisoning. The Task Force, chaired and staffed by Loyola University Chicago's ChildLaw Center, advocates for policy reform, promotes public awareness, and fosters collaborations to achieve its mission.
The Task Force is an alliance of public, private, and not-for-profit groups including community-based organizations; property management and realtor associations; the insurance industry; federal, state and local public health and housing agencies, and universities; and children's health and welfare advocates, tenant organizers, physicians, attorneys, and parents of children who have been lead poisoned.
The Task Force worked with Governor Rod R. Blagojevich to form the Lead Safe Housing Advisory Council. This Council, established by legislation, is charged with making recommendations to the Governor and General Assembly on lead poisoning prevention programs; adoption of lead-safe work practices; funding to help landlords and homeowners afford the cost of making housing lead-safe; and developing legislation to improve the effectiveness of State and local programs.
In addition to the Advisory Council, the Task Force:
- Raises awareness of the problem and solutions through
- Lead Safe Illinois newsletter
- Judicial benchbooks on laws relating to lead safety and lead poisoning prevention.
- Trainings for childcare providers, community based agencies, and parent networks.
The Task Force also is responsible for monitoring the City of Chicago's strategic plan to eliminate lead poisoning.
